On April 27th, the semi-final of the 13th National Legal English Competition in the East China Division (“the semi-final”) was held in Room 107 of the Huizhi Building. The semi-final was hosted by the National Legal English Competition Organizing Committee and organized by the School of Languages and Cultures (School of International Communication and Exchange) of Shanghai University of Political Science and Law. Previously, a total of 168 undergraduates, postgraduates, and legal practitioners from more than 40 universities in the East China Division registered for the preliminary round. After intense competition, 12 contestants advanced to the semi-final. The judging panel for the semi-final consisted of Professor Yu Suqing, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages at East China University of Political Science and Law, Professor Wan Hongyu from Shanghai International Studies University, Professor Adolf Peter from the School of International Law at Shanghai University of Political Science and Law, James Davies, a foreign teacher at Shanghai International Studies University, and Xia Ganlin, Vice Dean of the School of Languages and Cultures (School of International Communication and Exchange) at Shanghai University of Political Science and Law.
The 12 contestants delivered speeches closely related to the contest theme -- “Express Your Legal Views in English”. Their speeches were clear in theme and fluent in expression, showcasing their legal knowledge and oratory skills. In the Q&A session with the judges, the contestants demonstrated a solid foundation in legal knowledge and fluent English expression. After two rounds of “Legal English Speech” and “Judges’ Q&A”, contestants from Tongji University, Shanghai University, Shanghai University of Political Science and Law, Zhejiang Normal University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, East China University of Political Science and Law, and Shanghai International Studies University won the first, second, and third prizes respectively.
The National Legal English Competition has been successfully held for thirteen times since 2008. It is widely welcomed and praised by the legal education community and legal practice circles for its unique thoughtfulness, practicality, and social attention. This competition not only demonstrated the contestants’ legal knowledge and English expression skills but also greatly stimulated the enthusiasm of university students and legal practitioners for learning legal English, promoting the exchange and integration of Chinese and foreign legal cultures, and contributing to the construction of a high-level team of foreign-related legal talents.
